Site Re-Design

Friday, December 22nd, 2006

You may have noticed our new forum. We have set this up to try and create an online community for discussions on anything animal related.

We are in the process of converting the site from the design you see now, to the design you will see on the forum. I have set up a post on our forum for people to comment on the site re-design.

If you could visit the forum, sign up and post comments, it would be great!

Warning - pets for sale in Free Ad’s

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Pet Detectives: Pet Rescue want to warn people to beware of buying puppies from free ad papers, especially when the contact phone number is a mobile number.

Puppies are being farmed and sold in free ad papers en mass and are often of poor health. We desperately need people to be careful where they buy puppies from as this breeding should not be encouraged. The welfare of the animals is often not considered, and many suffer from parvo virus and can become ill resulting in high veterinary costs or even worse.

When looking to take a puppy into your home, you should contact a reputable breeder to find out the details of genuine breeders. That way you will have piece of mind that the puppy is fit and healthy, and dogs have not suffered by having to breed much more frequently than they should.

Our pet rescue organisation hears so often of farmed puppies that have been sold in free ad papers becoming ill. Beware of free ad papers selling puppies. These are often bred simply to make money and breeders are often not traceable after. We recommend you contact the Kennel Club when looking to take a puppy in as a member of the family.

A dog is for life?

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

Christmas time again soon … guess it’s the time - as a pet rescue organisation - to tell people that a dog is for life and not just for Christmas. So commonly heard, but nonetheless very important.

The beeb reported recently dogs that are being dumped at this time of year to make way for new puppies. This is being seen very predominantly in the Belfast area according to the USPCA. It has said there has even been cases of owners phoning in to make sure their pets have been picked up!

It is said that in the last month, 90 dogs have been picked up, and only one has been claimed as a lost dog, a very upsetting figure indeed!

Possible reasons for this include the popularity placed on certain breeds at different times. Different breeds have different followings, and among the most popular breeds are bull terriers, pomeranians and rotweillers.

It is a very sad time, when dogs who have been a family member for years, are just dumped and left at a local pet rescue, only to be replaced like they have gone out of fashion. Shameful.
