Pet Welfare Act

A pet welfare act that came into effect recently in Wales is due to come into force in England. The act - which has been dubbed the bill of rights for pets means that people will be liable for the basic welfare of their pets.

The act means much harsher penalties for people who do not care properly for their animals, with fines of up to £20,000 and jail terms of up to a year for cruelty where previously offences would have been punishable with a maximum of 6 months jail sentence or a £5000 fine.

Pets will need to be provided with an adequate diet, they will need to be housed with or away from other animals - depending on their individual needs, they should be able to exhibit normal behaviour and should be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Tails will no longer be permitted to be docked for cosmetic reasons.
