Running dogs alongside bikes

Something I wanted to bring up during the hot weather is the issue of people riding bicycles whilst their dog runs alongside them. I saw this recently on a particularly hot day, a beagle panting it’s little heart out having to keep up with a guy riding his bike.

A dog cannot regulate it’s heartbeat when it is made to follow alongside a bike and it is very important that people do not do this. If the rider is tired, they stop and take a break. Please remember your dog cannot stop for a break, he or she has to keep up, and the effort to run alongside a bike is far more exerting than riding a bike.

Please think before you think about doing this, and if you see somebody doing this, please politely tell them that it is very dangerous for their dog to do so.

How stupid do you sound… A dog can stop running if it feels the need to. It’s not going to keep running until it dies is it?

Our point is, dogs have died as a result of running alongside bikes in hot weather.

If you are riding, a dog will always try to keep up with you, and this can potentially lead to them collapsing as a result of a stroke. All we are trying to do is advise people about the safety of their animals.

A dog ‘can’ die due to over eating too. Why don’t you advise people not to feed their dogs.

Frankly we really have better things to do that get involved with comments like this.

We run a free service with advice people can either take up, or ignore. Appreciate your comments, but remember our views are just that, our views. We deal daily with the Police, RSPCA, local vets, dog wardens and many other organisations.

We are not going to get involved with any more comments which are placed solely to ridicule and belittle.

I’m glad you raised the issue of dogs running alongside bikes. I recently saw two girls with two dogs attached to their bikes. Clearly, the smaller dog had had enough and they were trying to put it in a small, drawstring rucksack as they told me “the dog is too lazy to run”. I could not help thinking the bag was likely to tighten around the dog’s neck so I jumped in the car to follow them to offer to take the dog home. I did not find them so I hope they were very close to home. Some people do not think about what they are doing and it is good to be able to get tips and guidance on things like this.
