The Clumber Spaniel

The Clumber Spaniel is a very strong, heavy Spaniel bread to assis hunters with fetching game from thick undergrowth. They are predominantly white with orange or lemon markings.

Clumbers are generally incredibly gentle and docile, and will 'plod' along with you on walks and sit by your feet while you work or watch tv.

Clumbers have a very good temperament and tend to be very greedy, thinking nothing of stealing a sandwich from your plate when you aren't watching!

History of the Clumber Spaniel

Clumber Spaniels are said to have originated in France, and during the French Revolution, the Duc de Noailles gave his prized spaniels to the Duke of Newcastle at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. This is where they got their name. Their development is said to be thanks to a gamekeeper who developed and nurtured the breed you see today.

Queen Victoria said of the Clumber Spaniel in her diary on the 16th October 1840:

"Walked out directly after breakfast before Albert went to shoot. He had his 7 fine Clumber Spaniels with us and we went into the Slopes, with such a funny old Gamekeeper, Walters, in order that I should see how the dogs found out their game. They are such dear, nice dogs."

In more modern times, 1996 in fact - Sh Ch Raycrofts Socialite was awarded the prestigeous Best in Show at Crufts.

Clumber Spaniel Features

The Clumber Spaniel is a very thick bodies dog, much like a barrel. Large paws and floppy ears, they often suffer from eye problems and require regular eye drop medication. Clumber Spaniels can be prone to dribble and can shed their coat - but not to look too much on the down side - they are quite possibly one of the gentlest dogs you could ever meet.
