The Rottweiler
The Rottweiler. Or is that spelt Rotweiller, anybody know? The Rottweiler, the hardest breed of dog to spell, is a large breed, predominantly black with mahogany colouring.
They are incredibly powerful and have an appearance of serenity and alertness. Rottweilers are very confident dogs who adore companionship.
History of the Rottweiler
Rottweilers were traditionally used as working dogs as far back as Roman times. Becoming much less common as time went on, they became in high demand as police dogs at the outbreak of the First World War.
It wasn't until the mid 1900s that the Rottweiler became an officially recognised breed with the Kennel Club.
Rottweiler Features
Rottweilers are of great strength and should be confident by nature. They have incredibly large skulls with deep brown eyes. Their chest is broad, and their back should be perfectly flat. Whilst tails are normally docked, they are naturally long in length and the practise has become illegal in Europe.
Rottweilers make wonderful companions when in the hands of responsible owners. They are immensely strong, and will remain docile until they perceive a threat. They are very intelligent dogs who love people, especially children. They are active and quick to learn. The life expectancy of this breed is between 8 to 11 years old.
They appear outwardly calm but are alert and responsive when recognising a threat. Males have a tendency to guard their owner or ‘master’. Females will become more protective of their property or home.
Considerations for owners
Rottweilers should be socialised from an early age. They are immensely strong, self-confident animals. Socialisation with people, children and other animals from an early age is vital part of ownership of this breed of dog, and will ensure they are brought up with a gentle tolerant character.
Pet insurance is an important part of pet ownership should your dog encounter health problems, especially in Rottweilers who have a history of hip and elbow dysplasia - another reason why reputable breeders (see the Kennel Club) should be sought when looking for a puppy. Good breeders will have dogs tested for signs of these problems before producing a new litter of puppies.
The intelligence of this breed means they require mental stimulation, and if neglected can be destructive. Rottweilers have a protective instinct and owners must exercise caution as a result of this when visitors are calling or at times of stress. Any indication of a threat directed towards an owner or household may bring out this instinct in the breed.
Rottweilers are a fantastic breed of dog but they do require a responsible owner and a good loving home, where they will receive the attention they require and deserve.
