Dog Theft

We would like to draw attention to Bruce Forsyth's Vets Get Scanning Appeal, a must read for all dog owners.

Current Dog Theft Trend:

We have seen a sharp escalation in dog theft. Theft of dogs normally takes place for one of two reasons. The first of these being to use for breeding purposes. Dogs that are stolen for this reason are likely to fall into the following criteria: they are not neutered, they are of pedigree breed or they are a popular breed.

Another reason dog theft occurs is to hold the dog for ransom. Dogs are not like a television, that is to say it is not simply of a fixed price. A dog is a member of the family, and for this reaon it is seen as an opportunity to take advantage of an owners concerns and emotions. Dog theft in this instance happens to make you pay a reward for the safe return of your animal.

Where dog theft occurs

Dog theft can occur pretty much at any time. We have had instances of dogs being stolen from outside shops where they have been tied up, and even from the back of an owners car as he was getting out.
Dog theft mainly occurs in rural areas, where the dog had free roam of a large area of land, offering thieves a good opportunity to steal the dog for a quick gettaway.

Pet Detectives recommends owners never tie their dogs up outside shops. Dogs being left outside shops are prime targets for thieves, and this is a frequent cause for dog theft.

Dog theft precautions

There are some precautions owners can take to avoid the theft of their dogs. Below are a few pointers for owners on avoiding dog theft happening to them

Never for any reason leave your dog tied up and unsupervised. We have had many cases of dogs being stolen under these circumstances.
Ensure your dog is microchipped. In dog theft cases, a micro–chipped pet will be traceable only to yourselves, and ensure others cannot claim your pet.
Neuter your animal. This will mean your pet cannot be stolen for breeding purposes. There are also medical reasons your dog should be neutered.
Do not tie your dog up outside a shop. This is a very common way in which dogs are stolen. If you need to shop, you should leave your dog safely at home. Avoid leaving your dog in a car (never leave a dog in a car in hot or warm weather as they may die of heatstroke).
When walking your dog, ensure you keep your dog within eye contact and be aware of what is around you. If you feel unsafe, leash your dog and leave.
