Pet Safety
It is essential for responsible pet owners to carefully consider pet safety. What follows is a list of some essential pet safety tips for dog and cat owners.
Please be aware that the pet safety list is non-exhaustive and owners should be prepared to take further precautions as and when necessary.
Pet safety is a big issue, and is becoming even more so as theft of animals for ransom is on the increase. Below are some tips which can help to increase the safety of your pet.
Investing in pet insurance is another great way to keep pets safe. Now you can buy pet insurance right now online and receive veterinary reimbursements for routine and emergency care.
Pet Safety for Dogs
Never leave your dog alone in the car, firstly it can cause distress if the dog is left for long periods which could be fatal (especially in hot weather), and secondly, your dog is a prime target for thieves. I have had many cases of stolen dogs which were left in a car.
Dogs aren't a big fan or shopping (apparently!), they much prefer a run on the beach or a big juicy bone! Tying your dog up outside a shop leaves them in danger of being stolen by opportunist thieves.
Never kennel a dog for long periods in the garden. I would advise against kenneling animals in a garden but if you do so, make sure they have adequate security and are provided with food and water.
A must for pet safety is micro chipping. Ensure your dog is micro chipped. Details on micro chipping is found further down the page!
Pet Safety for Cats
Microchip your cat! Having your pet microchipped means one scan will link your pet to you via the pet log (See microchipping section).
If you have your pet from a kitten, keep him/her indoors as long as you can up to the age of 1, well after males have been neutered. This will ensure he is a home loving cat and uninterested in straying.
Never leave your cat outdoors when you aren't at home.
Pet Safety - Microchipping
Micro chipping is an essential aspect of pet safety. We recommend every owner has their pet micro chipped. A microchip is a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice inserted between the shoulder blades. The cost of microchipping your animal is about £25 and includes life long membership to the pet log register.
All rescues and dog wardens carry scanners, so any animal that is found by them will reveal a 12 digit number which can be rung into pet log (24 hours a day). This number will link to your own details, linking the lost pet to you.
